School Mental Health Initiative Expands with $600K Commitment to Support Wisconsin Students

Madison, WI, April 6, 2026

WEA Member Benefits Foundation will expand its statewide school-based mental health initiative thanks to an increased commitment totaling $600,000 from the Roots & Wings Foundation. The funding will help grow access to school-based mental health services for K-12 students across Wisconsin.

“We are excited about the impact this additional grant will have on our capacity to provide mental health funding for more Wisconsin school districts,” WEA Member Benefits Foundation Executive Director Steve Goldberg said. “This continued support from Roots & Wings and other funders is a big factor in our ability to extend mental health funding to additional school districts and reach more students statewide.”

The initiative supports school districts in strengthening school-based mental health programs that connect students with counseling and other behavioral health services. The Foundation currently provides mental health funding to 21 Wisconsin school districts, serving approximately 148,000 of the state’s 785,000 K-12 students. Those districts are using this support to expand student access to care, integrate well-being into school culture, cover therapy costs for uninsured students, add new mental health services, increase availability of private counseling, expand peer support groups and more.
